An open channel is a channel where the surface pressure of the fluid remains constant along its path. If the fluid meets atmospheric pressure at the free level, it is considered an open-channel flow. This kind of flow can be modeled in a laboratory by using an experimental flume. The side walls of the experimental section are made of glass or plexiglass, which allows observation of the experiments. The inclination of the experimental flume can be finely adjusted to enable simulation of slope and to create a uniform flow at a constant discharge depth.
