A journal bearing simply consists of a hollow cylinder that is placed around an axis called a journal and is filled with a fluid (lubricant). The lubricating fluid creates a suitable environment to prevent metal-to-metal contact during bearing operation. The rotation of the axis inside the bearing creates an oil layer under the axis, which can be analyzed using the laws of fluid mechanics. This layer of oil, which is actually responsible for bearing the forces on the shaft by creating pressure, is deflected to the lower quarter of the left or right side of the bearing due to the rotation of the axis, which is left or right depending on the direction of rotation of the shaft.
